About Troy

Troy has worked in the entertainment industry touring and producing theatrical shows around the world, built data centres, worked in commercial television, tried to solve neurodegeneration with machine learning in Silicon Valley, and built production spaces.

It started with a modem

While still in high school, and working part time for a production company - Troy discovered the world of dial up computing and so started a dial up bulletin board system - at the (still fast by NBN standards 🤷‍♀️) blistering speed of 28.8kbps.

Once Troy finished school, graduated from running a single line BBS - to working for Queensland's largest Internet Service Providers. That later went on to grow into one of the worlds largest hosting providers. During his time with both those companies Troy worked on everything from system automation scripting, customer service, to building and managing data centres.

There's also the theatre

The same time Troy was getting people to type AT&F to reset their modem, he was also at the Tivoli Theatre in Brisbane. Then it was a beautiful art-deco venue owned and operated by successful businesswoman, Ann Garms.

Over time Troy ended up as the Production Manager at the Tivoli, and enjoyed learning a lot more than he ever expected to about the operation of a venue, the management of staff, and why you have to be nice to people who do your garbage collection.

Mixing the two

Troy hasn't really ever stepped too far away from mixing different industries together. Touring shows around the world, and ending up with a stint on Broadway was a highlight - but the technology was always there - with dancers covered in sensors to produce the music one example for a major Australian arts festival.

Troy really got to test his abilities to mix the entertainment industry and technology as CTO of Moment Media, parent company of The X Studio. A luxury media agnostic broadcast facility in the heart of Kings Cross, Sydney.

Hosting the likes of Kyle and Jackie O, Guy Sebastian and Sophie Monk (to name a few) and broadcasting on their custom built YouTube challenger - "X Cast" it was a highlight of his career so far.

Machine Learning, Natural Language & Mum

In 2016 Troy's mum, Jan was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia.

This was a call to action focussing Troy and the team on their first major Machine Learning project - "Really".

Really was designed to process our day-to-day communications - looking for the changes in our language that could potentially reveal the early signs of neurodegeneration.

Troy and the team spent three years in Silicon Valley and learned a tremendous amount about building products, raising investment, networking and a long list of other startup'y things.

Troy was lucky enough to return to Australia and join the Pioneera team helping to build their game-changing technology identifying and remediating stress in the workplace.

Storytelling technology

In the last few years, Troy has been able to focus on the use of technology in the stage and screen storytelling industries. Designing a new theatrical venue that has been described as the biggest change in theatre since theatrical lighting and leading an amazing team at AFTRS designing and deploying an LED Volume stage.
